A pale sandstone face fills this square landscape, with sweeping layers crossed by darker, uneven grooves. Checkerboard Mesa-inspired rock is the central subject. A blue upper sky and scattered trees around the shoulder provide breathing room around the large stone form.

Checkerboard Mesa: the picture you will make

The pale face carries curved bedding bands and irregular fracture channels. Their changing spacing keeps the rock natural rather than turning it into a rigid grid. Trees gather along the left shoulder and lower slope, giving small dark shapes to compare with the broad, bright stone. Warm shadows make the mesa’s lower edges and folds easier to follow.

National Park Service image records and a US Geological Survey image identify Checkerboard Mesa and show the named rock formation. They support the place context and characteristic layered, grooved surface. This kit is an original illustration, not a reproduction of those photographs or a claim to their exact viewpoint. The picture area measures 50 × 50 cm (approximately 19.7 × 19.7 in). Its native 201 × 201 pattern has 40,401 square-diamond positions and 40 DMC colors. Coverage is full drill. Canvas margins are extra; a frame is not included. Measure the completed picture before choosing a frame or mat.

Make the landscape in sections

Follow a sweeping sandstone layer to build the large face, or begin with the darker tree shapes beside it. The pale areas and narrow shadow channels offer different sections to work through. Keep the square drills aligned while the natural changes in the rock develop. A broad rock study for a remembered drive through Zion or a small collection of desert landscapes.
