How Diamond Painting Kits Are Made: a Factory Tour in Five Steps

Every diamond painting kit is a small logistics puzzle: thousands of resin drills in a few dozen exact colors, a canvas printed with a symbol for each one, and no room for a missing bag. Here is how a made-to-order kit actually gets made — the five steps, with the real production numbers most suppliers never publish. Every photo below is a real kit or a real frame from our line.
What a finished made-to-order kit looks like before it’s packed: a 30 × 40 cm printed canvas (symbols in every cell, legend down both edges listing all 23 bags with their DMC codes), the strip of numbered drill bags, and the tool kit — craft tray, two multiplacers, applicator + grip, tweezers, wax.
Step 1 — the chart becomes a canvas
Production starts from the design file: a chart where every cell is one drill (if you haven’t read what a chart actually is, start there). The chart is printed onto the adhesive canvas as a grid of symbols — one symbol per color — plus the legend that maps symbols to DMC codes and bag numbers.

That legend isn’t an afterthought either — it’s engineered. On our print spec the columns are dimensioned to the millimeter (0.67 cm for bag number and symbol, 0.96 cm for the color code), and it prints down both edges of the canvas so you never lose your place.
Step 2 — 446 colors, sorted by hand into numbered bags
For made-to-order kits, drills are sorted largely by hand: a wall of drawers labeled by DMC color number, and a strip of small bags pre-printed with sequence numbers 1 through N — typically around 30 per kit. A worker fills bag 1→N against the kit’s spec sheet, using measured scoops: drill counts convert to weight (a square drill weighs ~0.0055 g), so a bag is filled to grams, not counted drill by drill.

Bags come off the line as a numbered strip — bag 1 to bag N in order, each labeled with its DMC code and weight:

A single bag is substantial: one we weighed held 37 g of DMC 720 — roughly 6,700 drills at ~0.0055 g each.
Scale check: a 30×40 cm square-drill kit carries ≈16,300 drills — about 90 g of resin across all its bags. Premium kits use resin drills with a clean 16-facet cut and no burrs; budget kits typically substitute acrylic, which is exactly where the sparkle difference comes from.
Step 3 — glue and dry
The printed canvas gets its adhesive layer and is dried flat. The glue is a quality lever crafters feel immediately: too weak and drills lift at the corners months later; too aggressive and repositioning a misplaced drill tears the coating. A tight-weave flannelette canvas — denser than the loose weave in budget kits — keeps the grid geometry stable through this step.
Step 4 — check against the spec sheet
Before packing, the kit is checked as a system: print sharpness and grid alignment on the canvas, bag count against the spec sheet, legend against the palette.
Geometry gets verified, not assumed: the printed area is measured against the spec’d design size — because a grid that drifted 2 mm is a grid whose drills won’t tile.
The check is boring by design — a kit that reaches a customer with bag 17 missing is a refund, not a craft project.
Materials themselves are tested upstream: our kits’ materials are ASTM D-4236 / LHAMA reviewed and CA Prop 65 compliant — the art-materials safety bar for the US market.
Step 5 — pack, white-label, ship
The rolled canvas, the numbered drill bags, and the tool kit (pen, wax, tray, tweezers) are packed into an unbranded box. For sellers this is the point: the kit ships white-label directly to your customer, made to order — no warehouse copy of your design ever exists — at a DDP price that already includes the shipping.
White-label, made literal: this is a seller’s kit — their brand printed on the canvas, their design, their 15-colour palette (the same kit whose bag strip you saw above). Nothing on it says Pixelmade.
The canvas ships rolled in a rigid tube — never folded, because a crease in the adhesive layer is a permanent flaw in the finished piece. Bags and tools travel inside the tube with it.
Then into a 100% recycled mailer — unbranded except for the recycling note, so the only brand your customer sees is yours.
Why “made to order” changes the economics
A traditional kit factory prints thousands of the same design and warehouses them. A made-to-order line runs the five steps above per kit — which is why custom kits with a minimum order of one are possible at all, and why your unsold-inventory risk is exactly zero. It’s also what makes the whole line automatable: sellers connect their store (or their AI coding agent) and each sale simply enqueues one run of this process.
FAQ
How long does production take? Kits are produced on demand — production plus international delivery is quoted per order before you pay (the estimate is part of checkout, and API users can query it directly).
What’s inside every kit? The printed adhesive canvas, the numbered drill bags for that design’s palette, and the tool kit: applicator pen, wax, sorting tray, tweezers.
Are the drills counted individually? No — by weight. Counts convert to grams (~0.0055 g per square drill), which is faster and more accurate than counting, with headroom added per bag.
Is the process different for round vs square drills? Same line, different pitch: round drills are 2.822 mm (a slightly coarser grid, ≈13,200 drills on a 30×40 cm), square are 2.54 mm and tile edge-to-edge.
